Imagining the Queer side of the kings and queens of France from a plate, with mosaic.
Here, the Marquis de Cinq-Mars presents his drag queen "La Marquise du 8 Mars" with her pearl necklace to celebrate International Women's Day.
Direct technique on wood.
Materials: glass paste and ceramic.
Frame: American wooden box and gold polish.
Passionate about the art of drag queens for years, inspiration was found in dessert plates, vestiges of a bygone era when royalty represented an unalterable ideal. The kings and queens on these plates free themselves from their crowns to reveal their drag essence, in an explosion of colors and glitter.
Far from being a simple parody, these works celebrate the subversive power of drag, its transformative power and its ability to challenge established norms. They invite us to rethink the notions of gender and identity, and to celebrate the beauty of difference.
